$50,000 “Super Series” Races Added To ACT Late Model Tour 2005 Schedule

Waterbury, VT – Along with its newly-released 2005 ACT Late Model Tour schedule, ACT has a pair of “Super Series” events at Thunder Road Int’l Speedbowl in Barre, VT and Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH. The Super Series events are the two largest Late Model races in the region, each paying $10,000 to win with total purses surpassing $50,000.

The concept of the Super Series events was tested at Lee USA Speedway in September 2004 with the New England Dodge Dealers National 150, and was a wild success. Seventy-six teams from seven U.S. states and two Canadian provinces attempted to qualify for the 36 starting spots. A “plus/minus” handicap system was implemented for the event, rewarding the drivers that passed the most cars to advance in their qualifiers with main event starting spots near the front of the field.

CASCAR and USAR ProCup standout D.J. Kennington of London, Ontario drove a chassis built by Mike McColl to the win in his first career ACT Tour start. Kennington was the biggest beneficiary of the plus/minus system, as he earned the pole for the main event by advancing nine positions in his qualifier, more than any other driver. After pitting out of the lead for a tire change near the 1/3 mark in the event, Kennington steadily worked his way back to the lead, taking over with 13 laps remaining. After lap leader bonuses, Kennington pocketed over $11,500. Waterbury, VT’s Chad Wheeler earned just over $5,700 for his second-place finish, while third-place driver Roger Brown of Lancaster, NH took home more than $3,000.

The Super Series events are slated for the Labor Day weekend of September 3rd and 4th at Thunder Road, with a one-day event being held at Lee USA Speedway on Sunday, September 25. The Labor Day Classic at Thunder Road is a tradition dating back to the early 1960s, and, like Lee USA’s event, is expected to draw over 60 teams.
