DJ Kennington Top Gun at ACT Dodge Dealers National 150 Lee USA Speedway
Lee, NH - - Canadian DJ Kennington crossed the border and made off with the $10,000 1st-place prize in the ACT Dodge Dealers National 150 Sunday at Lee USA Speedway. The London, Ontario started on the pole, led for 53 laps, pitted for rear tires ten laps later then raced back up through a stellar field to regain the lead from Roger Brown on lap 137. A final restart on lap 143 was no problem for the CASCAR ace, but it allowed Chad Wheeler to take second from Brown. ACT Dodge Tour point leader Jean-Paul Cyr was fourth, Todd Stone from 30th by way of the last chance qualifier, was fifth.
Patrick Laperle with Ryan Moore in tow, powered his way to the front and took the lead on lap 55, but a deflating tire forced him into the pits and Moore took over. For more than fifty laps, Moore dominated, before tire trouble forced him in as well. Next on the point was Roger Brown, but he was soon challenged by the resurging Kennington machine. . "When I pitted, the car was too loose, but my radio was out and I had to choose to come in my own, I thought there might time to race my way back into it," the winner said. "This is a brand new car and it was very strong."
Wheeler dropped to sixth at the halfway mark, then gained two positions when first, Eric Williams, who had made a charge into second, blew a tire and hit the turn three wall, then Moore fell off the pace. "The track was abrasive, and the racing was hard," said Wheeler. "We tried to manage the tires as best we could and it paid off. This is the best race of my career and the car’s in one piece and a rocket headed to the Milk Bowl. I’m ecstatic."
Brent Dragon was a determined sixth, overcoming two trips to the rear. Laperle rallied back to seventh. Steve Fisher, Cris Michaud and Ron Henry completed the top ten. Their top-10 finishes kept Dragon and Laperle alive in their bid to overtake Cyr for the ACT championship. Heading into the Milk Bowl tour finale this coming weekend at Thunder Road, Cyr leads Dragon by 27 points and Laperle by 49.
Seventy-six Late Models were on hand as part of the biggest Late Model ever held in New England. The heat winners were Eric Williams, Trampas Demers, Dave Wilcox, Joey Laquerre and Roger Brown. Dale Shaw, Phil Scott and Mark Lamberton were 1-2-3 in the "B" feature. Jamie Fisher (16th), Dave Whitcomb (21st), Eddie MacDonald (27th) and Joey Laquerre (31st) ran many laps in the top five.
